What Dimensions Is a 3 mL Peptide Vial?

A standard 3 mL peptide vial measures 16–17 mm in outer diameter and 35–40 mm in height for the glass body, with a 13 mm crimp neck finish. Add a rubber stopper and flip-off cap and total height comes to roughly 40–45 mm. The "3 mL" refers to the brimful capacity of the glass — not the amount of powder inside, and not the volume it will comfortably hold once filled.

The confusion behind this question is almost always the same: a vial sold as "3 mg" and a vial sold as "3 mL" are describing two completely different things. The milligram figure is the dry mass of lyophilized powder sealed inside. The millilitre figure is the physical capacity of the glass container. A 3 mg vial and a 10 mg vial are, in the overwhelming majority of cases, the exact same piece of glass.

The two figures that matter most in practice are the neck finish and the brimful capacity, and both are routinely misread. The 13 mm crimp is a standardised neck dimension, not a diameter of the vial — it determines which stoppers and aluminium seals fit, and it is shared across a wide range of small-format vials. Brimful capacity is measured to the very top of the glass, which is a level no filled vial ever reaches.

Why 3 mL doesn't mean 3 mL of usable space

Brimful capacity is the volume of the container filled to overflowing. Real fills stop well short of that for two reasons. First, the stopper occupies part of the neck when seated. Second, a sealed vial needs headspace — gas has to have somewhere to go when the stopper is inserted and when the vial changes temperature or altitude in transit.

The working figure for a 3 mL vial is around 2 to 2.5 mL. Filling closer to the brim than that risks pressurising the vial and forcing liquid past the stopper.

  • Brimful capacity — the total internal volume of the glass, ~3 mL.
  • Nominal capacity — the manufacturer's rated working volume, typically 2 mL.
  • Practical fill — what actually goes in, ~2–2.5 mL depending on the application.

Does the lyophilized powder take up volume?

Effectively no. A few milligrams of lyophilized peptide occupies a negligible fraction of the vial's internal volume, which is why the same 3 mL vial is used across a wide range of milligram quantities. What varies visibly is the appearance of the cake — the amount of dry material sitting at the bottom — not the space available for liquid.

What is a 13 mm crimp neck?

A crimp neck is a glass finish designed to be closed with a rubber stopper and sealed with an aluminium ring that is mechanically crimped into place. The 13 mm figure describes the outer diameter of the neck flange, and it is a standardised dimension — a 13 mm stopper and a 13 mm seal will fit any 13 mm vial regardless of who made it.

The flip-off cap on top is a plastic disc bonded to that aluminium seal. It is removed by hand to expose the stopper underneath; the aluminium ring itself stays in place and continues to hold the seal. Larger formats, typically 10 mL and above, generally move to a 20 mm neck finish.

How much label fits on a 3 mL vial?

A vial with a 17 mm outer diameter has a circumference of approximately 53 mm; at 16 mm the circumference is approximately 50 mm. A 40 mm wide label therefore wraps roughly three quarters of the way around, leaving a deliberate gap so the contents remain visible through the glass.

Height is the tighter constraint. With 35–40 mm of glass body, a 20 mm tall label sits comfortably within the straight-walled section without running into the shoulder where the vial curves toward the neck. That is why 40 × 20 mm has become a common size for this format.
